From Streetcars, Seed Stores, and Golf Courses to Today!
| In 1919, sixteen citizens met in the old Post Office on A View Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia, to discuss the possibility of forming an Anglican Episcopal church in Ocean View to save locals the long streetcar journey to downtown Norfolk's Old Christ Church. | ||
By 1920, services were being held in an abandoned seed store near the Post Office. Priests from downtown Norfolk came out to Ocean View once or twice a month to celebrate Holy Communion. | ||
Early in 1921, construction of a permanent church on A View Avenue began, and by the end of the year, the Church of the Advent was in operation as a mission church of Old Christ Church in Norfolk. | ||
In 1945, the Church purchased a part of the Pinewell Country Club property. The old golf course clubhouse was renovated and the sanctuary on Norfolk Avenue was born, leading to The Episcopal Church of the Advent being declared an independent parish in 1946. | ||
In 1959, groundbreaking took place for the construction of a new Christian Education wing as well as a new, larger sanctuary. The new sanctuary added the second entrance to the church on Sherwood Place. | ![]() |
